Computer Based Training
Becoming an excellent Customer Service Representative (CSR) for Toot’n
Totum starts with two days of paid Computer Based Training (CBT).
Using innovative software to create a virtual university, employees
can work at a computer, at their own pace, and be trained in areas of
employee benefits, store equipment, policies and procedures, and alcohol
and tobacco laws just to name a few. CBT incorporates audio and video
clips with text and graphics to make the information fun and easy to
remember. CBT is the wave of the future. It can be conducted at a central
training office or on sight, with the results instantly emailed to a
central computer.
At Toot’n Totum, each employee must complete and pass the state
approved seller-training programs on alcohol and tobacco before they
can work in a store as a CSR.
The alcohol seller-training course follows a state-mandated curriculum,
(provided by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) and takes approximately
4 hours to complete. In this course, employees learn not only the laws
regarding the sell of alcohol to minors and intoxicated persons, but
also how to check identification, how to monitor their customers, and
how to refuse a sell if necessary. After completing and passing this
course, employees are certified to sell alcoholic beverages for two years
in any establishment in the state of Texas.
The tobacco seller-training course follows guidelines provided by the
state comptroller. In this two hour long course, employees are taught
the state and federal laws regarding the sell of tobacco, how to identify
minors, and the consequences for selling to a minor.
In addition to the courses on alcohol and tobacco, employees also receive
their initial CBT training on how to be an outstanding CSR. Employees
are introduced to situations they may encounter and the equipment they
will use on a daily basis. Daily procedures such as clock-in and clock-out,
shift change reports and auditmaster are introduced in CBT in order to
ease the transition to hands-on store training. It takes approximately
two days to complete all the CBT courses before an employee is moved
to a store location for hands-on training.
Store Orientation
After our employees have successfully completed the CBT and have received
their tobacco and alcohol certification, the employee is then placed
at a designated store for further training and orientation.
This additional training is necessary in order to better familiarize
the new employee with our store operations and customer service. In most
cases you will be working hand in hand with either the store manager,
assistant manager or other associates. Your district manager is also
available to answer any questions you might have.
We also offer the opportunity for our store employees to attend the “Convenience
Store/Retail Management courses offered at Amarillo College at company
expense. We will announce at the beginning of each semester the courses
available for that particular semester. You will learn about our industry
and retail management while earning college credits.
Support Center
In addition to the above, our support center and human resources office
are available to all of our employees at any time in order to assist
during your term of employment with Toot’n Totum.
